Sleepiness Scale

Helpful Hints: What to expect

..During your sleep study, several electrodes are used to monitor:

-Blood oxygen level with a fingertip pulse oximeter

-Muscle movements in each leg

-Brain activity (EEG)

-Heart (EKG)

-Respiratory belts and airflow monitoring

Patient rooms are very cozy and completely private. You may watch television or read when your hook-up is complete. Each patient has access to gender specific half-bathroom, which are handicap-accessible.

Your technician will assist you in completing you paperwork, explain the procedure to you, and monitor you for the entire procedure.

The day of your appointment:

-No naps

-No alcoholic beverages

-No caffeine after 12 noon.

-Take all medications as you would normally

Please wash and dry your hair thoroughly before your appointment. Use of any hair styling products, make-up, body or facial lotions will prevent the electrodes from sticking to your scalp and skin successfully.

What to bring:

-Comfortable loose fitting sleepwear (patient’s are not permitted to wear only undergarments)

-Comfort items from home (example: pillow or a novel to read)

-Toiletries (example: toothbrush and toothpaste)

-You will have to shower and dress at your home the following morning

-Completed Sleep Questionnaires

-Please print a clear list of all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter medications, names, dosages and how often you take them per day.

Bring any medications that you may need to take at bedtime. If you routinely use a nasal spray or sinus medication it will be helpful for your study to bring these medications.

This will help to ensure a successful study at our facility. Please call with any questions or concerns you may have.
